Pedestrian wind effects criteria
Through consultation with our members and the wider wind engineering community, the AWES has developed the document, “Guidelines for Pedestrian Wind Effects Criteria”. The document can be found here.
Please direct any questions regarding this document to treasurer@awes.org.
Winter Lecture available for viewing
The 2014 AWES Winter Lecture was held on 2 July, 2014 at QUT in Brisbane. This was the first lecture in a new initiative for the AWES, which we hope will enhance the strong linkages the Society has with industry and academia. Our first lecture was presented by Life Member, Prof. Chris Letchford and can now be viewed online by those who were unable to make the event. Enjoy!
2014 AWES Winter Lecture
The AWES will hold the 2014 AWES Winter Lecture on 2 July, 2014 at QUT in Brisbane. This is the first in a biannual series of public lectures aimed at providing the wider engineering community with a forum for hearing engaging speakers discuss some of the major issues confronting wind engineering and wind related sciences. Further details and registration information can be found on our Events page.
Archived workshop proceedings now available
All previous AWES Workshop proceedings are now freely available for members (and non-members) to search, read and download! With more than 500 papers spanning almost 30 years, the considerable contribution of AWES to the growth and development of the field of wind engineering is clearly evident. The archive can be accessed here. Enjoy!
Please direct any comment/suggestion/queries to Dr Matthew Mason.
2013 AWES Undergraduate Thesis Prize
The 2013 AWES Undergraduate Thesis Prize has been awarded to Mr Daniel Kang of the University of Southern Queensland for his thesis, CFD Analysis of a Shrouded Vertical Axis Wind Turbine. The AWES congratulates Daniel on this achievement! A copy of Daniel’s submission can be viewed at the Prize Archive on this website.
Call for AWES Executive nominations
The term of the current AWES committee finishes at the end of this year. Interested AWES members should consider nominating themselves for the 2014-15 AWES Committee. The constitution of the AWES specifies that, “The Society shall be managed by a National Committee which shall comprise six elected persons, each of whom shall serve for a two year term, commencing on the first of January of an even numbered year. The members of the National Committee shall elect from themselves a Chairman, a Secretary, a Treasurer and any other positions they deem appropriate. The National Committee may co-opt additional members with the proviso that the total number of the Committee does not exceed eight at any one time. Election of the National Committee shall be carried out by email ballot of the registered membership of the Society. The ballot shall be completed before the 31st December in each odd-numbered year.”
AWES Life Member George Walker has kindly agreed to again act as returning officer. If you wish to nominate for the committee please send an email to George Walker at George.walker@aonbenfield.com by Thursday the 14th of November. Please include in your email a short description of yourself and the skills you would bring to the committee (no more than 200 words). This description will be emailed to AWES members along with the instructions for the email ballot. If you wish to nominate another AWES member please get their permission first and then email the nomination to George along with the 200 word description.
Pedestrian wind effects criteria document for review
As some of you may be aware the AWES is considering publishing guidelines/recommendations on pedestrian wind criteria for use by planners and wind engineering consultants. At the request of the AWES, Harry Fricke has kindly written up draft guidelines for comment by members. A discussion group has also been set up to facilitate discussion about the proposal and so we can archive everyone’s comments/recommendations.
If you would like to receive and review a copy of the proposed criteria, please send an email to Matthew Mason (gallery@awes.org). You will then be sent a copy of the document and added to the email list allowing you to see what everyone else is saying and to upload comments of your own.
2013 Postgraduate Prize winner
The AWES congratulates PhD student Amy Lovisa from James Cook University for winning this year’s AWES Postgraduate Prize for her presentation entitled, Wind loading tributaries for pierced fixed metal roof cladding, at the 16th AWES Workshop in Brisbane earlier this year. A copy of Amy’s extended abstract can be read here. The AWES thanks all postgraduate students who presented their work at the 16th AWES Workshop and looks forward to hearing about the excellent progress made by each of you when we meet again in early 2015.
